As we journey through this season of Lent, United Women in Faith invites you to join us in reflecting deeply on our call to “do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with [our] God” (Micah 6:8). This is a time to turn our faith into action, as we seek to be a presence of justice and compassion in a world that urgently needs it. You can do so today by joining United Women in Faith’s Lenten Action for Justice.
Executive orders and policies by the Trump administration and recent legislative decisions made in Congress impede United Women in Faith’s social justice priorities to end mass incarceration, advance climate justice, and negatively affect the lives of women, children, and youth in our communities, the United States, and around the world.
The issue of mass incarceration remains a priority for United Women in Faith. The systemic rollback of civil rights protections, especially for communities of color, stands as a stark reminder of the racial injustices that continue to plague our society. Executive orders and policies that exacerbate the criminalization of marginalized communities, particularly immigrants and communities of color, are unjust and morally indefensible. We decry the passage of the Laken Riley Act by Congress, and we condemn the slew of presidential executive orders that even go so far as to challenge the premise of the 14th Amendment birthright citizenship guarantee. There’s been a deliberate effort to demonize governmental and private-sector efforts to achieve diverse, equitable, and inclusive communities. In an Orwellian twist, the Department of Education now solicits community complaints via a special “‘End DEI’ Portal” while showing little interest in upholding the civil rights of students of color, immigrant students, trans students and students with disabilities. This goes against our commitment to racial justice and equity.
Executive orders that withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement and freeze the disbursement of federal funds, like the Inflation Reduction Act, not only threaten our nation’s ability to transition to a just renewable energy economy but also set us back decades in climate, conservation, health, and environmental justice efforts by eliminating hard-sought-for environmental standards and opening up lands to fossil fuel extraction and extractive industries. Churches and faith-based nonprofits that benefited in the past from direct government payments for the installation of solar panels, charging stations, and heat power systems saved thousands in electricity costs are now in fear of unpaid contracts, that could force them to bear the financial burden. The executive orders we are seeing not only stymie efforts to combat climate change but also undermine efforts to reduce air pollution and provide cleaner, healthier environments for all communities and access remedies—particularly those already suffering the most.
Congress has not done enough to counter these harmful policies to prevent executive overreach. Well-intentioned members of Congress must do more than shake their fingers in dismay– they must use all their available power to resist any of the administration’s policies that undermine the well-being of creation, women, youth, and children. Additionally, local and state governments must do more. “Sanctuary” municipalities should stand strong and protect their residents – including their undocumented residents – by refusing to collude with ICE/DHS in any efforts toward mass deportation.
Take action today to support racial and climate justice by using the links below to reach out to Congress and your local newspapers.
