“City of Refuge, Sacramento” is a community based organization in Oak Park, Sacramento. It exists to support people living in marginalized communities, especially women who have been victimized by sexual exploitation and trafficking or abused, experiencing homelessness, or are in unsafe living environments. Many of these women are single mothers.
Through its Housing Program, City of Refuge has been able to house mothers with their children in multiple safe housing locations. In the last 10 years, more than 300 women and 100 children have been sheltered from abuse, homelessness and discrimination. This service also include Drug and Alcohol deterrent classes , Life enrichment courses etc. Children’s programs include mentorship and leadership, sports (football, basketball) and dance lessons to girls (ages 5-16yrs).
At the moment 45 families are also receiving food security programs, family and parenting classes and client advocacy for long term housing programs.
These are just a few ways City of Refuge, Sacramento is serving the most vulnerable in a marginalized community.
